If you are visiting Selous Game Reserve, you can help the project by collecting data on the lions.
If you are visiting the Northern photographic area: please ask your safari guide if you can record data on the lions you see. We require location data (where you see the lions), group compostion (how many you see), and a record of when you saw them. Any digital photos (in particular close-ups of the face) would be a bonus. We have distributed data sheets and maps at all the lodges to collect this data, and digital copies of your photos can be left at the lodge. Should you have any questions please contact us.
If you are visiting any of the hunting blocks: we require any information on the lions from this area. Were they abundant? How many did you see? Where did you see them? Again digital photos would be a bonus. If you are visiting a hunting block and want to collect data for us, please contact us.
Donations:
Like most small conservation projects, we are desperately short of funds. Currently, we drive around in a 1988 model LandRover (keeping it on the road is proving very expensive). We would be grateful for any donation. You can donate online via PayPal (click on the donate button at the bottom of the page).
Acknowledgements:
We are grateful for permission, support and constructive advice from the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and the Wildlife Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to carry out lion research in Selous Game Reserve. The research has been made possible by grants from National Geographic (Grant # EC0274-06), IdeaWild, DICE (University of Kent) and the University of Minnesota (through Serengeti Lion Project). We are grateful to Wildthings Safaris for logistical and finacial assistance.
